Moffitt Day: Help Support Cancer Research

Moffitt Cancer Center will be traveling to Tallahassee, Florida's State Capitol courtyard to celebrate the 10th Annual Moffitt Day, February 17.

The Moffitt Cancer Center, located in Tampa, Florida, is part of an elite group called the National Cancer Institute: Comprehensive Cancer Center, and aids in research to prevent and cure cancer.

“Moffitt Cancer Center is committed in training the next generation of Florida-trained physicians, scientists and health care professionals,” said Kim Polacek, media relations coordinator for the Moffit Cancer Center from Tampa, Fla.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, and one of every four deaths in the United State is caused from cancer.

Moffitt Day is an Annual Advocacy Event at the Florida State Capitol and will start on Tuesday at 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to raise awareness on its cancer center. The importance of this event is to provide testimonial at the Capitol for continued state funding for cancer research and to show lawmakers the importance of this issue.

“It is important for the younger generation to use our voices and help raise awareness on research that is so important for our future health,” said Elijah Anderson, a senior FSU humanities major from Sarasota, Fla.

Cure on Wheels will also be present at the Moffit Day event. “The day will kick off when 24 Cure on Wheels cyclists complete their four day cancer-awareness ride at the steps of the historic Capitol. Followed by a news conference with Moffitt Cancer Center President and CEO Dr. Alan F. List, and Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam, to announce a new partnership aimed at healthy living solutions for Floridians,” said Polacek.

Cure on Wheels is a fundraiser advocating increased funding for cancer research by bicycling from Tampa to Tallahassee. Riders will leave Tampa, February 14 and arrive at the Capitol in Tallahassee on February 17.

The registration fee is $395 and includes hotel rooms for 3 nights, breakfast and lunch, insurance and a rider jersey.

You can spread awareness and show your support for the Moffitt Cancer Center on social media by using the hashtag #IamMoffitt or changing your profile picture to the I Am Moffitt logo.

“I am definitely going to switch my profile picture to the Moffitt logo. My friend had cancer and I want everyone to know how important cancer research funding is and how it can help save lives,” said Azure Green, a graduating senior at FSU from Tampa, Fla.
