The winter holidays is the season of giving back to the less fortunate.

On Tuesday, the Alpha Xi chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi and the Haitian Culture Club hosted a toy and clothing drive in the Rattlers Den to help orphans in Haiti.

Herandre Fair- Curry, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, planned the event. He said growing up with a Haitian background, always giving back to Haiti was part of his life growing up.

“My mom’s side of the family is Haitian, so usually I always give back,” said Curry. “My grandmother usually collects clothes and anything that hasn't been used to send to Haiti. I wanted to take the initiative to make sure to let others know that giving back is very important to less fortunate.”

Curry has had this idea for a while. With this in mind, Curry sought out the collaboration from his fraternity and the Haitian Cultural Club to help host the event.

According to, one of Kappa Alpha Psi’s objectives is to inspire service in the public’s interest.

Both organizations accepted clothes, toys, and toiletries. Sometime next week, the items will be given to the children of the Lamb of God Orphanage Children of Haiti.

Curry believes this event breaks the stereotype of fraternities only affecting the social aspect of campus instead of partying.

Andrew Rhone, a spring initiation of the Alpha Xi Kappa Alpha Psi, said the importance of serving the community is important as a member of a divine nine organization.

“I pride myself in completing community service,” said Rhone. “A member of a divine nine organization allows a person to reach his community and globally. I appreciate what my fraternity brother Herandre has done tonight.”

According to Curry, the drive produced enough supplies to fill his car.

Izzy Chimpman, a sophomore business major, donated and attended the event.

“The ability to give back to another nation is just awesome,” said Chipman. “ I applaud the men of Kappa Alpha Psi to serve the children of Haiti. I had no problem to donate to this cause because of the intention to help kids.”
