Opening the doors of GRADUATE SCHOOL

The key that unlocks the door to opportunity isn’t very hard to find. In fact it can be found here on campus.

The School of Graduate Studies and Research will present an informational forum on preparing for graduate school, Friday in Perry Paige auditorium from 1-5 p.m.

“We want to peak an interest for students to attend graduate school, said Linda Knight, director of fellowship programs and recruitment.

The forum will give students a chance to learn firsthand from guest speakers about preparing for graduate school.

The featured panelist will include Lauren Miller from Kaplan who will discuss taking the graduate record examination and the application process.

Joan Sweet from FAMU’s career center will speak on interviewing skills and Linda Knight will speak on financing graduate school.

Chanta M. Haywood, interim dean of Graduate Studies, will instruct students on writing a personal statement.

The information offered would assist students in deciding how to choose a program and how to finance graduate school.

“Some of the most important criteria for selecting a graduate school is a school’s program, money and location,” said Kai Jennings, a senior political science student from Miami.

Representatives from various schools and colleges on campus such as the School of Journalism and Graphic Communication, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and the School of Business will provide insight on their respected programs.

“In today’s market undergrad is at an entry-level status; a graduate degree makes the student more marketable and the benefits are astronomical,” Knight said.

Not only will graduate school hopefuls be attending the forum, but undergraduate students like Jabir Najair, 20, plan to attend to get a head start on graduate school.

“Graduation is approaching and it’s important for me to decide what I plan to do as far as grad school,” said the third year business student from Orlando.

“Attending the forum will help me do just that.”
