Florida A&M University, renowned for its commitment to academic excellence, has increasingly recognized the pivotal role of on-campus housing in shaping the overall student experience.

It is the belief that FAMU’s commitment to providing top-notch living spaces contributes directly to its reputation for a great experience in the classroom.

Malik Patrick, a residential assistant at FAMU, says that some housing, such as the Palmetto South units, are newly renovated but the residential buildings still have issues.

“I feel like we can do way better-being No. 1,” Patrick said.

Despite personal feelings, there are things to admire about the infrastructure of FAMU dorms. The university has a solid commitment to excellent service to its residence halls.

“The school hears our complaints,”  Patrick said.

Housing quality extends beyond physical infrastructure; it encompasses students’ overall well-being.

Majai Finely, a sophomore majoring in psychology, says that living in dorms is a quality experience.

“FAMU currently provides cleanliness, a safe living environment, and convenience with being close to classes,”  Finely said.

FAMU’s commitment to quality housing aligns with student satisfaction with living conditions and a great college experience. Students, however, feel that there are a few negatives to staying in the dorms on campus.

“Paying to do your laundry, random fire drills, and curfews,” Finely said.

Johnson Hebert, the interim director of the Office of University Housing, said that his staff keeps housing up to par for residents.

“The housing maintenance team also provides custodial services for each community daily. All common areas, including hallways, lobbies, community rooms, and bathrooms are routinely cleaned and sanitized throughout the day,” Johnson said.

FAMU housing collaborates with other stakeholders such as Off-Campus Housing and other agencies that align with the housing experience for FAMU students.

“Our growth would not be possible without the expertise of so many others, including the division of finance and administration, which houses human resources, facilities planning, emergency management, and budgeting,” Johnson said.

FAMU’s emphasis on housing is not merely a matter of comfort but a strategic investment in the ultimate FAMU living experience, Johnson added.

The university’s commitment to providing students with top-notch living spaces and a supportive community creates an environment conducive to comfort and success. FAMU is a critical element in fostering a culture of delivering an experience that extends beyond the classroom walls to its students.
