The rainy weather did not stop students from coming out to the annual JCPenney Suit – Up event.
JCPenney Suit Up is geared around preparing students for the upcoming career and internship expo. This
event took place, Sunday, from 5-8 p.m., at the Governor Square mall.
During the fall 2022 JCPenney Suit up, over 400 students were in attendance, and the Director of the
Career and Professional Development Center, Dr. Bill Means had high expectations for more students to
be in attendance for the Spring.
“I am really happy that we can host this event for our students to kick off our career expo events,” said
Means. “The event gives students the chance to, one, be aware of the career expo week, and two,
students are able to win gift cards to purchase professional attire.”
JCPenney teams up with FAMU’s Career and Professional Development Center each Fall and Spring
semester to make sure students have the appropriate attire for the upcoming expo, at a discounted
rate. JCPenney offered numerous professional attire options for both men and women. Clothing, shoes
and accessories were marked down up to 30% off, and an extra 30% was taken off with coupons that
were given out during the event.
Drawings for JCPenney’s Gift Card during the suit- up event, ranged from $50- $400. Students were able
to participate in the drawings by registering through Handshake beforehand. There was also a live DJ
and JCPenney employees handing out free snacks.
“We are hoping that this opportunity will help students to set themselves up for internships and jobs,
because when you look your best, you feel your best,” said Machia Sanders, a second year Business
Administration student.
For many individuals, the end goal for attending college is to take on an internship or leave with a job.
Some students may not be financially stable enough to purchase attire for certain occasions such as the
career expo. Students being able to have opportunities to get professional attire at a discounted price,
makes a bigger difference than expected.
“Many students may not have professional attire or may not be able to afford it, so I feel like the
JCPenney Suit Up is a momentous event for students to get attire at a discounted price.”said Kaleb
Winn a first-year architecture student.
The Spring’s career and internship expo is set for Wednesday, January 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the
Al Lawson Multiple Center. There will also be a virtual expo held on Thursday, January 26, from 10 a.m. –
3 p.m. as well.
