FAMU employees to be laid off

Employee layoffs were included in the $16.2 million reduction to the university’s 2009-2010 operating budget approved by Florida A & M’s Board of Trustees on Wednesday.

FAMU President James Ammons said that with the additional cuts, administrators could not continue to protect all university employees.

Spokeswoman Sharon Saunders said administrators plan to hold additional meetings next week to specify what positions will be eliminated. The 2009-2010 budget has to be finalized by July 1.

According to Saunders some of the layoffs include positions that are not filled or held by retiring employees. The full number of people who will be laid off is still unknown.

About 120 positions would have been eliminated had it not been for federal stimulus dollars worth about $7.9 million.
