Lee Jones, associate dean in the College of Education at Florida State University, is scheduled as the guest speaker at Wednesday’s annual Honors Convocation.
Jones’ long list of professional achievements and his reputation as “a prolific orator” prompted Dr. Ivy Mitchell of the University Honors program to ask him to speak to students.
“We chose Dr. Jones because he’s a good motivational speaker and because of the qualities that he has,” Mitchell said.
Jones is the producer and host of a TV talk show and author of three books.
This year’s theme is “A Salute to Collegiate Scholars, Leaders and Community Servants.” The program seeks to recognize students who maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average.
Larry O. Rivers, a 21-year-old student and Tallahassee native is thankful for the opportunity to be recognized.
“I just hope that my achievements will inspire someone to do well, ” said the senior public relations student.
Rivers also encourages other students to do well academically in order to be prepared for the career world.
“Academics is the reason you’re pursuing an education here at Florida A&M University,” Rivers said. “You have to have balance academically, socially and spiritually to be successful. The key to this is time management.”
The University Honor’s Program will also salute high achievers with an Honor’s banquet on Thursday. Only students with a 3.5 GPA or higher are invited to attend.
The speaker for Thursday’s banquet will be Andrew Gillum, a senior political science student and a newly elected city commissioner.
