Two dead, six injured in shooting at Florida State University

Tallahassee Police reported that two are dead and six were injured in a shooting that occurred on Florida State University’s campus Thursday afternoon. One suspect is currently in custody.

According to The Tallahassee Democrat, around 3:30 p.m. the university told the community that”law enforcement has neutralized the threat” but warned that multiple buildings were still “active crime scenes.”

The university issued an emergency alert at 12:01 p.m. EDT, reporting a shooter near the Student Union. Students and staff were instructed to shelter in place, lock doors, and stay away from windows.

At least six individuals have been hospitalized at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital; the total number injured may change. According to The Tallahassee Democrat, there have not been any confirmed deaths. A witness reported seeing a college-aged man exit the Student Union with a handgun, according to WCTV.​

Around 12:40 p.m., Florida State University confirmed that police were on the scene. Anyone in need of urgent assistance was advised to call 911 or contact FSU Police at 850-644-1234.

For those not on FSU’s main campus, the university advises avoiding coming to campus at this time, and that all classes and university events for Thursday are cancelled.

It is unknown if the full university lockdown has been lifted, but some students report being released from their safe-zone holding areas..
