Tackling Tallahassee’s gun violence

While crime for this time of year has decreased, concerns about gun violence remain in Tallahassee. In the first three months of 2025, several shooting incidents have occurred across neighborhoods and near college campuses, leaving residents and students uneasy.

“This isn’t just a problem for the police department,” stated the Tallahassee Police Department, emphasizing the need for community-wide collaboration. TPD statistics reveal a troubling surge in gun-related incidents, particularly involving younger individuals.

College students, especially at Florida A&M University and Florida State University, are feeling the impact. “I used to feel fine walking home after dark, but now I’m constantly worried,” expressed a FAMU alum.

Gregory Mason, an Uber driver and long-time Southside resident, feels the same way. He says, “We really need to come together as a city and figure out real solutions” and advocate for community-based initiatives and improved police-resident trust.

It’s clear that the community faces a pressing challenge: public safety. Fear and anxiety have become too common, impacting student life. This isn’t just about numbers; it’s about the real lives affected by gun violence and crime.

Citizens expressed a need for tangible solutions. Increased community policing, where officers build trust through regular interaction, is crucial. Investing in youth programs like mentorship and job training offers at-risk youth a path to success. Stricter gun control legislation at the state level is essential to curb violence. Community outreach and education on gun safety and conflict resolution can foster a safer environment. Improved security infrastructure, including lighting and surveillance, can deter crime.

Addressing these issues requires a united effort. Students, residents, law enforcement and local government must work together. The community cannot afford inaction.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Contact your local representatives: Advocate for gun control and community safety initiatives.
  • Support youth programs: Volunteer your time or donate to organizations that empower young people.
  • Attend community meetings: Engage in dialogue and contribute to finding solutions. ● Educate yourself and others: Share information on gun safety and conflict resolution.

Let’s work together to create a safer Tallahassee for everyone.
