On February 26, the Alpha Xi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. hosted their annual event, “Suits for Our Sons.” The event provided free business attire, including suits, dress shirts, ties, pants and other business casual clothing to men on FAMU’s campus. As Polemarch Larry LaFrance stated, “Achievement starts with appearance.”

This event was created 11 years ago, with the name reflecting its purpose. “Suits for Our Sons” was initially created by the alumni chapter, who donated all the suits when the event initially started. Their goal was to support incoming college students, seeing them as the next generation of leaders they hoped to nurture.

DeAngelo Crawford, tasked with organizing the event, explained, “We are sons compared to those already in these spaces.” Understanding the impact this event would have on incoming students, Crawford went above and beyond to ensure its success.

He began planning in the summer of 2024, reaching out to ASOS to ask for contributions. Initially aiming for 300 suits, he was surprised when over 700 pieces were donated, including button-up shirts, blazers, suits, pants, vests, garment bags, shoes and ties. Looking the part is essential, as it influences how you walk into a room and how others perceive your confidence.

Herbert Bailey, assistant vice president of Academic Affairs at FAMU and advisor for the Alpha Xi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., emphasized the importance of presentation. “People who meet you will wonder who you are and where you’re coming from because looking the part helps you act the part,” he said. His words resonate deeply with the young men in the chapter, who recognize the importance of upholding such values in their own personal journeys.

Omari Rasheed also highlighted the event’s significance, saying, “A lot of people don’t have the proper attire for business or know what to say in an interview, which makes this event so meaningful and impactful.”

In addition to providing clothing, the event offered valuable lessons on resumes, business etiquette and elevator pitches. Attendees were taught the importance of introducing themselves with confidence and making a strong first impression. A freshman attendee shared that the most valuable takeaway was the importance of a firm handshake and always wearing a suit, no matter the weather.

“Suits for Our Sons” is more than just an event to provide attire; it’s an initiative designed to empower and prepare young men for professional success. By combining tangible resources with lessons on personal development, this event sets the foundation for future leaders to excel in their careers. It’s a reminder that presentation and confidence go hand in hand, shaping not

only how we see ourselves and how the world perceives us.
