Florida A&M overcame early adversity to secure a gritty 73-68 win over Grambling State.
The victory, which showcased the Rattlers’ resilience was a statement as the team prepares for the final stretch of the regular season.
The game started as a physical battle, with Grambling applying relentless full-court pressure that initially disrupted FAMU’s offensive rhythm.
Turnovers plagued both teams in the opening minutes, but they found their groove once the Rattlers settled down. Head coach Patrick Crarey credited his team’s ability to adjust and maintain composure despite Grambling’s aggressive defensive style.
“They played so aggressively; it felt like they were fouling on every possession,” Crarey said. “But that’s just the way they play, and I thought we did a great job of handling that pressure after the first eight or nine minutes.”
One of the defining moments of the game came midway through the second half when FAMU seized control and refused to let go.
Junior forward Roderick Coffee III. led the way, displaying the kind of leadership and poise that has been a staple of his career. Coffee, who has embraced multiple roles throughout the season, delivered on both ends of the floor, finishing with a team-high 19 points while also facilitating the offense.
“I’ve been asked to do a lot of different things my whole life,” Coffee said. “I just take on whatever role is needed that night. Some guys shy away from it, but I embrace it.”
FAMU’s defensive intensity was another key factor down the stretch. The Rattlers locked in, forcing Grambling into tough shots and limiting their second-chance opportunities.
Beyond the box score, the night was about more than just basketball. Senior Day brought an added layer of emotion, with families in attendance to celebrate the careers of those who have given their all to the program.
Crarey, known for his player-first coaching style, made it a point to ensure his seniors felt appreciated.
“I tell my guys all the time, this relationship isn’t about production, it’s about commitment and communication,” Crarey said. “Senior Day means a lot to me because these guys have stuck with me through the ups and downs. I want them to know how much they mean to this program.”
With the win, FAMU moves into a crucial stretch of the season, set to face Southern, the top team in the conference, in a highly anticipated matchup.
The Rattlers still have their eyes set on improving their seeding for the conference tournament, and Crarey made it clear there’s no time to celebrate just yet.
“We know what happened the last time we played them,” Crarey said. “They embarrassed us at their place. We’ll be locked in and ready.”
The Rattlers’ final two games of the season will be at home on Monday against Southern and on Saturday on the road against Bethune Cookman. The Rattlers are currently tied for fourth with Alabama State in the SWAC.
