What is Her University?

Florida A&M University has many student organizations, among them is Her University, a faith-based student organization  that has made an impact on campus by creating a safe space for young women to connect, grow spiritually, and develop professionally.

Founded by Exzabriana Barton during her sophomore year, Her University initially  began as a small community initiative in Tallahassee before transitioning into a campus organization. Barton’s goal was to create a space where young women could break out of their shells and grow personally and spiritually.

She wanted to make a difference on campus as well as for women who are closed off like she was,” said Chierie Chieh, current president of Famu’s  Her University chapter.

Since starting on  FAMUs fall of 2023 with 12 members the organization quickly expanded and   now has over 300 members. The organization also has a growing chapter on Florida State’s Campus.

For many members, the sense of community and shared faith is what makes Her University stand out.

“I always wanted to be a part of something where I felt noticed and heard. The fact that it’s Christian-based really drew me in—I want to grow in my faith, and being around others who want that too is important,” said Janiyah Houston, a current member of HER University.

Much like Houston there are other Her University members that feel the same.

“At first, I was drawn in by the color pink—it was cute,” says Slanda Phillistin, another current member.

“But what kept me here was the faith-based mission. It’s hard to find spaces on campus that help you stay grounded in your faith while also supporting your academic journey,” Phillistin added.

Her University focuses on the development of its members, addressing mental health, professional growth, and physical wellness. One of its signature initiatives, Becoming Her Week, offers workshops, fitness events, and financial events aimed at empowering women to become the best versions of themselves.

We strive to be inclusive and create a safe space for all girls, regardless of where they are in their faith journey,” Chierie explained. “We’re not just about social events—we focus on mental health, professional development, and physical health especially through our Becoming Her Week.”
