For many first-generation and low-income students, the road to a college degree is filled with financial, emotional and academic challenges. The Esther Funds Foundation, a faith-based non-profit organization, is stepping in to change that narrative—one student at a time.

The foundation, which focuses on preventing college dropouts by addressing external hardships and mental health struggles, has established a strong presence at Florida A&M University. The FAMU chapter aims to provide resources and guidance to students who may otherwise struggle to stay enrolled due to financial barriers and personal obstacles.

Founded with the belief that education should be accessible to all, The Esther Funds Foundation operates on principles of faith, service, and empowerment. By offering financial assistance, mentorship, and mental health support, the foundation works to remove some of the largest barriers that prevent students from completing their education.

At FAMU, where a significant number of students are first-generation, the need for such a support system is undeniable. Many students juggle part-time jobs, family obligations and rigorous coursework, making financial and emotional stability a constant battle. The Esther Funds Foundation works to alleviate these struggles by providing direct financial aid, emergency funding and mental health resources to ensure students can focus on their education without unnecessary burdens.

Since its introduction to FAMU’s campus, The Esther Funds Foundation has already made a tangible impact. Through partnerships with faculty, local businesses and community leaders, the organization has been able to provide scholarship opportunities, wellness workshops and emergency financial assistance to students in need.

“First-generation and low-income students often face challenges like limited access to resources, lack of guidance and financial stress. Esther Funds Foundation helps by offering scholarships, mentorship programs, and academic support to help combat those challenges.” said Samara Taplin, the community service chair for the Esther Funds Foundation’s FAMU chapter.

Beyond financial assistance, the foundation ensures that students are aware of the mental health resources available on campus. Brianna West, volunteer manager for the Esther Funds Foundation, emphasized the importance of mental health support.

“One of our key initiatives is a mentorship program that connects students with experienced mentors who can offer guidance, encouragement and a listening ear. Additionally, we actively raise awareness about different mental health challenges, equipping students with coping strategies to manage stress, anxiety and other emotional struggles.” West said.

The foundation has also hosted events like the Back to School Bash, a large-scale giveaway providing essential resources, scholarship information and donated clothing for students in need. Another major initiative, the College Dropout Prevention Walk, brought the community together to raise awareness about the challenges that lead students to leave college prematurely.

With more funding and community support, the organization hopes to provide even more scholarships, create internship pipelines, and introduce wellness initiatives that cater to the specific needs of students navigating higher education.
