Tallahassee International Airport is set to receive a $6.7 million federal grant to fund critical infrastructure improvements, city officials recently announced. The funding, awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration Airport Infrastructure Grants program, will be used for new taxiways and lighting upgrades aimed at enhancing safety and efficiency.

According to a press release from the city of Tallahassee, the grant will support the construction of taxiways B11 and B12, as well as the rehabilitation of the existing taxiway Bravo. The improvements are expected to minimize foreign object debris and extend the lifespan of key airport infrastructure.

While airport officials could not be reached for comment, previous reporting from the city highlighted the significance of these improvements. In a statement from a city press release, David Pollard, director of aviation for the city, said, “Through our terminal modernization project, runway improvements, parking enhancements, and more, we are committed to providing a world-class travel experience.”

This grant is part of TLH’s ongoing efforts to modernize its facilities and expand its role in regional and international travel. In 2019, the airport secured a $1.77 million federal grant to design an International Passenger Processing Facility and Federal Inspection Station.

Previous coverage from the city of Tallahassee also highlighted the economic potential of this project. Tallahassee’s ability to import and export internationally will help to further grow the local economy and is great news for the community and businesses across the region, Mayor John Dailey said in a prior statement from a city press release.

The IPPF is a key element of TLH’s multi-year, $28 million terminal expansion, which aims to accommodate international flights and facilitate global trade, according to Florida Construction News. Officials believe this expansion will position TLH as a major hub for both passenger and cargo operations in Northwest Florida.

Additionally, the city is moving forward with the Airport Gateway project, scheduled to begin construction this year. The initiative will enhance connectivity between TLH and downtown Tallahassee with improved roads, bicycle lanes, sidewalks and upgraded landscaping, signage and lighting.

The economic impact of these upgrades could be significant. TLH is located near Innovation Park, home to more than 30 organizations, including the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and Danfoss Turbocor. City leaders anticipate that modernized airport facilities will support economic growth and increase business opportunities in the region.

As Tallahassee International Airport continues to expand and modernize, travelers and residents can expect improvements that enhance safety, accessibility and the overall travel experience.
