A table full of thanks: classic dishes

In just a few weeks, we will go the whole day fasting to have room for the feast that brings friends and family together around the table. It’s a time to express gratitude and savor delicious dishes that make this holiday so memorable. While everyone has their own family favorites, there are a few Thanksgiving classics that are almost always present—and they never disappoint.

When it comes to the main course, the star of Thanksgiving is usually the turkey- perfectly roasted, seasoned, and often stuffed with herbs, the turkey fills the kitchen with an irresistible aroma. But turkey doesn’t have to stand alone; ham is another mainstay, often glazed with a hint of honey or brown sugar for extra sweetness topped with pineapple and cherries. And then, there’s the savory delight of dressing (not stuffing!). Many families agree that dressing, made with cornbread, broth, and spices, pairs perfectly with a dollop of canned cranberry sauce.

Thanksgiving sides are just as important as the main course. A true Southern classic, collard greens simmered with smoked turkey necks bring a rich, hearty flavor to the table. Then there are yams- baked to caramelized perfection, often topped with a sprinkle of cinnamon or brown sugar. And, of course, baked mac and cheese is a must-have. Made with layers of gooey cheese and perfectly baked pasta, it’s the comfort food we all crave. Cornbread, warm from the oven, rounds out the meal, offering a slightly sweet, crumbly bite that’s great for sopping up gravy or adding texture to the plate.

Finally, we come to the grand finale: desserts! Thanksgiving is an excuse to indulge, and the dessert spread is often the highlight of the meal. Pound cake, with its dense, buttery texture, is a crowd-pleaser, and lemon cake adds a burst of citrusy flavor to balance out the richness of the meal. Pies are a Thanksgiving staple, and everyone has their favorites. My top three? Pumpkin pie, with its spiced, creamy filling; apple pie, brimming with tender apples and cinnamon; and, of course, sweet potato pie—a Southern favorite that’s creamy, sweet, and impossible to resist.

Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate tradition, and these classic dishes are at the heart of it. From the savory turkey and sides to the indulgent desserts, each bite is a reminder of the flavors that bring us together, making Thanksgiving one of the most cherished meals of the year.
