As Florida A&M University’s football team heads into its bye week, the Rattlers sit at 3-2 overall, with a 1-0 record in SWAC play.

While the season has been marked by its share of challenges, there’s a palpable sense of optimism as they prepare for the second half. After an up-and-down non-conference schedule, FAMU seems to find its rhythm, especially as they fully turn their focus to SWAC opponents.

The Rattlers started the season strong with a win over Norfolk State University. Despite a slow start for their first home game against South Carolina State, they overcame, extending their home winning streak. The next games tested their resolve.

The team dropped two tough non-conference road matchups, but bounced back with a crucial conference victory that kept their postseason aspirations alive. The win over the Alabama State Hornets on Oct. 10 gave them momentum heading into this much-needed break.

Transfer quarterback Daniel Richardson leads this offense behind center.

Richardson’s play has been a bright spot for the Rattlers. The transfer from Central Michigan has brought experience and poise to the quarterback position. His ability to stretch the field with his arm has opened up the offense in ways that have kept opposing defenses on their heels.

Through five games, Richardson has displayed flashes of brilliance, throwing for over 1,000 yards and maintaining a solid touchdown-to-interception ratio: nine touchdowns to three interceptions. His accuracy, particularly on third downs, has been a key factor in FAMU’s ability to sustain drives and convert in critical moments.

While Richardson’s play has been impressive, it’s clear the entire team is buying into the system. The offensive line has done well in pass protection, giving Richardson time to survey the field and make big plays. In the running game, the Rattlers have leaned on a strong stable of backs.

While there’s room for improvement, the balance between the run and pass has kept defenses guessing.

On the defensive side, the Rattlers’ unit continues to make strides. Though they’ve given up some big plays in non-conference games, they’ve clamped down when it matters most in SWAC play. The defense’s ability to generate turnovers has been crucial, and they’ll look to build on that success as they face the heart of their conference schedule.

With the bye week allowing time for rest and adjustments, there’s a strong belief within the program that FAMU is poised for a deep SWAC run. Their 1-0 record in conference play sets them up well, and if they can maintain their positive momentum, this could be a season that fans look back on as a turning point for the Rattlers.
