Rapper Rich Homie Quan died at the age of 33 on Thursday, September 5.
Fulton County Medical Examiner Jimmy Snadler confirmed to AP on Tuesday that Quan was taken to the hospital, where he later died after being found “unresponsive” on the sofa by his girlfriend. According to Sadler, he was notified of the rapper’s death on Thursday. An autopsy took place on Friday, September 6; the cause of death was not immediately known but was rumored to be a Drug overdose.
Quan, whose real name is Dequantes Devontay Lamar, was a well-known Hip-Hop artist throughout the early 2010s. He published several mixtapes before his 2013 breakthrough single, “Type of Way.” He was also a solo artist for the famous record label company owned by Atlanta rapper, ‘Young Thug, entitled Rich Gang. Many Atlanta-based rappers, such as Outkast and Gucci Mane, influenced rich Homie Quan’s music.
Quan’s tragic death caused many millennials to reflect on his impact on Hip-Hop from his hit singles such as “Walk thru,” “Milk Marie,” “Never Fold,” and “Perfect Flower.” He has also featured other hip-hop hits, such as “Lifestyle” with Young Thug and Birdman, also known as Rich Gang. Quan’s collaborations with producers like Zaytoven and London on da Track helped Atlanta-based producers become more well-known.
FAMU senior Nina Shortt says, “I remember when the song Flex came out, it was a very catchy song on the radio, and a lot of people would dance to the song and post it on social media; I just remember it being a very vibrant song that put people in a good mood.”
Rapper 2 Chainz, Quan’s friend and musical partner, said, “D– lil brother, we just spoke about shooting a video, special prayer for you and your family.” Quavo, another Atlanta rapper, also paid homage on Instagram. He posted a photo, which included the Quan, himself, and several other musicians. He captioned the photo, “May God be with us. I never saw this being a part of our journey.”
Lamar is survived by his four children, two of which he had with his long-term girlfriend, Amber Williams. In 2006, at sixteen, she gave birth to his oldest son, Devin. The rapper’s two kids, Layor Leonis, age three, and Royal, age ten, were born to his long-term partner. The family of Rich Homie Quan expressed to TMZ that they are “shattered and heartbroken by his sudden death.”
No information regarding funeral arrangements for the rapper has been released.
