When it comes to dining options, Tallahassee residents may have a breath of fresh air. Many residents complain that the capital, a college town, lacks places that appeal to college students.

This is especially true surrounding the Florida A&M campus, where there is little to choose from outside of fast food.

Surcheros Fresh Mex has opened a new Tallahassee location in the Ocala Corner shopping center, next to Publix. The location is about 10 minutes from the Florida A&M campus. The grand opening was on February 26, and students enjoyed the new option.

The modern environment could be a great study location or hang-out spot. It blends well with the other locations on the strip.

Customers can choose from grilled burritos, burrito bowls, tacos, nachos, and salads. From there, they have four meat options: chicken, ground beef, carnitas, and steak. Additional toppings, such as lettuce, salsa, and cheese.

On Friday night, I visited Sucheros for the first time with two of my friends, Selena Robinson and Saniya Hart. The staff was helpful and attentive during the ordering process, even offering suggestions. I had the ground beef nachos, totaling $15.78. They came with queso and guac, which is a positive thing, considering many restaurants charge for these ingredients.

Selena Robinson is a first-year student excited to try the new dining option. Robinson expressed that during her first year living in Tallahassee, she fell victim to eating in the same few restaurants repeatedly. She ordered a steak quesadilla with a flour tortilla.

“Surcheros is a 10 out of 10. I loved it,” Robinson said, “I would definitely dine there again because there are so many options, and I can get something new every time.”

There is a signature Sucheros sauce that is sweet and spicy, as well as two unique organic drink options. Mandarin cardamom is a certified organic drink from orange, cardamom, and turmeric. Berry patch is made from strawberry, cherry, and apple cider vinegar.

Saniya Hart is a first-year student who would like to try Sucheros again. She had two crunchy steak tacos topped with lettuce and cheese. Her total came up to $12.88. Hart’s favorite part of the meal was the queso dip.

“The queso dip made their food unique,” Hart said, “it tasted more authentic, and it was probably the best queso I have had in Tallahassee.”

My friends and I agreed that Sucheros Fresh Mex was a favorable dining experience. The environment was welcoming, and the food was fresh even at night. This restaurant has the potential to be a bustling and popular spot.
