In a battle on the court this past Monday, the Florida A&M University (FAMU) men’s basketball team faced a tough defeat against the Alcorn State Braves, with a final score of 79-68.

According to SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference), the Rattlers’ (4-20, 2-11), despite their efforts, the team fell short of securing the win, adding another chapter to their season of adversity.

Throughout the game, the Rattlers showed resilience, with four players demonstrating their scoring skills by reaching double figures. Leading the charge was Shannon Grant, whose exceptional performance included 15 points and seven rebounds. Keith Lamar contributed 13 points, while Jalen Speer made his presence known with 12 points and six rebounds. These standout efforts displayed the team’s depth and determination despite the outcome.

Guiding the Rattlers through the highs and lows of the game is their head coach, Robert McCullum

As they regroup and analyze their performance from the recent matchup, Florida A&M University Men’s Basketball Team point guard, Jalen Speer, highlighted their undoubtedly focus on refining their strategies and executing their game plan effectively against their upcoming opponent.

“I feel like we played hard, especially after the second half. We started to focus on playing our brand of basketball. In the first half, the Braves came out playing hard and showed why they are a good team, but I feel like we responded well to the adversity, despite our loss,” Speers said.

Speers reflected on the difficulties during the game, with plans to use them to the team’s advantage throughout the remainder of the season.

“A big factor in the game was turnovers. We committed 15 turnovers to their 5 turnovers. They are pretty good at making teams commit turnovers and turning them into points. They ended up with 27 points off turnovers and we completed 12 points, in the game of basketball that is a big thing. So, moving forward noticing things like that and applying more pressure during workouts and future games,” Speers said.

The Rattlers are gearing up for their next challenge as they prepare to face Alabama State on February 24th at 4 pm.
