The 2024 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships witnessed a spectacular display of athleticism and determination at the Birmingham CrossPlex from Saturday, February 17, to Sunday, February 18.

Among the standout performances, the Florida A&M University Rattlers’ women’s team emerged as the champions, securing yet another victory by earning a total of 15 medals throughout the championship, further solidifying their position as one of the premier programs in the conference.

The SWAC is renowned for its competitive spirit and the caliber of athletes it produces. Comprising historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), the SWAC fosters an environment of excellence in both academics and athletics. Each year, schools from across the conference gather to compete in various sports, highlighting their talents and striving for victory.

For the women’s track team of Florida A&M University, success in track and field is nothing new. With a legacy of excellence, they have consistently demonstrated their prowess on the track, earning numerous accolades and championships over the years.

Notably, Nya Blocker and Breanna Brown-Marshall distinguished themselves by setting new SWAC championship records in the 200-meter dash and high jump.

Led by Garfield Ellenwood II, Florida A&M University’s Director of Track & Field and Cross Country and fueled by the determination of its athletes, the Florida A&M women’s track and field team entered the 2024 championship with a singular focus.

“They were very prepared. We knew what the goal was while we were training all fall for this moment and doing everything from their own mental and physical preparation,” Ellenwood shared.

Ellenwood underscored the team’s aspirations for the forthcoming season and stated, “We are focused on building upon this win and applying the same mindset to the outdoor season as we did with the indoor season.”

Prior to their triumph at the 2024 SWAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, the Rattlers had already amassed an impressive collection of titles, cementing their status as one of the premier programs in the conference.

Following their victory, the Rattlers will take some time to recuperate before the official qualifying list for the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Indoor Track & Field Championships (scheduled for March 8-9) is released.
