Self care is critical

“Self love “ and “self care” have become the go-to terms when referring to enjoying one’s single season. However it’s important to show yourself love and respect whether you’re in a relationship or not.

It’s easy to neglect personal hobbies, going out to your favorite restaurants or even habits that make you feel at peace when you are wrapped up in the hustle of life.

While performing actions of self care can be time consuming, doing actionable steps to care for yourself is necessary and has remarkable benefits.

Matt Glowiak, a professor at Southern New Hampshire University, says there are health benefits associated with self-care and adds that it’s important to incorporate it in your daily routine.

“Self care refers to anything that you do to keep yourself mentally, emotionally, physically, socially and spiritually healthy. If you don’t practice self-care regularly, you’re risking your well-being and inviting burnout,” Glowiak said.

A great way to start your day is by affirming yourself with positive statements. Remind yourself of your worth and capabilities.

Perform self-care rituals by dedicating time each day to do activities that nourish your mind, body and soul, such as taking a soothing bath, practicing yoga or going for a walk in nature.

Try to prioritize a healthy lifestyle that nourishes your body with nutritious food, regular exercise and getting enough sleep.

Sleep is a basic component to having a great day. A lack of sleep can be detrimental to one’s productivity. Taking care of your physical health is a form of self-love.

According to Leah Irish, an assistant professor and sleep researcher at North Dakota State University, “One big reason for lack of sleep is a lack of prioritization.”

Tianna Fannell, a graduating public relations student at Florida A&M, said self-care is an important part of her weekly routine. She said her favorite way to show herself love is by treating herself to a self-care day.

“I enjoy cooking my favorite meal with a bottle of wine,” Fannell said. “I also do my skin care routine as well as do my nails and hair while watching my favorite TV show.”

Engage in hobbies and passions that bring you joy and fulfillment, whether it’s painting, playing music, reading or any other hobby you enjoy. Understanding that your emotional well-being is in your control is the first step to living a happy life.

Lastly, make it a habit to celebrate your accomplishments and acknowledge your achievements, no matter how small they may seem. Give yourself credit for your efforts and progress.

Doing these small actions on a consistent basis can make you feel more rejuvenated and ready to handle anything life throws at you.
