Anticipation is building for an extraordinary theatrical event to captivate local audiences and celebrate the rich tapestry of history and heritage. On Feb. 18, Lee Hall Auditorium at Florida A&M University will host “Descendants Speak: An Off-Broadway Production,” presented by Community Builders.

At the helm of this groundbreaking production is the visionary Chad Lawson Cooper, whose remarkable talent as a writer and producer promises to deliver an unforgettable evening of storytelling and performance. Inspired by the legacies of unique individuals, Cooper’s production aims to intertwine narratives that resonate with the universal themes of identity, resilience and the pursuit of justice.

Central to the production is the portrayal of Dr. W.E.B. DuBois, the iconic scholar, activist and co-founder of the NAACP. Renowned actor Tony Vaughn, celebrated for his diverse roles, including Colonel in Tyler Perry’s “Meet the Browns” TV series, steps into the shoes of DuBois, promising to breathe life into the man whose intellectual contributions shaped the course of history.

Joining Vaughn is Alicia Robinson Cooper, a luminary of stage and screen, whose portrayal of Harriet Tubman in previous productions has garnered widespread acclaim. With Vaughn, she brings depth and authenticity to the story, embodying the spirit of resilience and determination that defines the African American experience.

Adding a personal dimension to the production are descendants of these legendary figures. Dr. Jeffrey Peck DuBois, great-grandson of Dr. W.E.B. DuBois, offers a poignant perspective on his ancestor’s enduring legacy, bridging the gap between past and present. Dr. Alex Brickler, great-great-nephew of Harriet Tubman and a Tallahassee physician, enriches the narrative with his familial connection, underscoring the profound impact of her fearless activism.

Against FAMU’s historic Lee Hall Auditorium backdrop, the stage is set for an evening of reflection, inspiration and celebration. Audience members will journey through time as the curtain rises, traveling the milestones and moments that have shaped the African American experience.

“Descendants Speak” is more than a theatrical production; it is a testament to the power of storytelling to enlighten the past, inspire the present, and chart the course for the future. Through the artistry of Chad Lawson Cooper and the brilliance of its cast, this production invites audiences to bear witness to the resilience, strength and enduring spirit of a community united by a shared history and a collective vision for tomorrow.

As the lights dim and the first music notes fill the auditorium, anticipation will give way to wonder .“Descendants Speak” is a tribute to the past and a beacon of hope for future generations.
