Starting a new semester can be both exciting and nerve-wracking for Florida A&M University students. As they embark on a fresh academic journey, tackling the “new semester jitters” becomes a shared experience. For many, it’s about finding a balance between academics, social life, and self-care.

Amidst the anticipation of new classes and the promise of intellectual growth, students often navigate a range of emotions. The buzz of activity on campus is palpable, with students reconnecting with friends, joining clubs, and immersing themselves in the vibrant campus culture.

FAMU students emphasize the importance of creating a schedule that accommodates classes, study sessions, and downtime. This structured approach provides a sense of stability, helping to alleviate anxiety about the unknown.

Bryce Washington, a fourth-year business administration student, said that his way of tackling the new semester is by staying on top of assignments and utilizing prayer when he feels overwhelmed. He said that relying on prayer is mandatory.

“When the semester starts, I try to stay on top of homework as they assign it,” Washington said. “I really just pray when I get overwhelmed.”

Engaging with campus resources is another key aspect of conquering nervousness about the new semester. FAMU offers a variety of support services, including tutoring, counseling, and career guidance.

Alexis Williamson, a fourth-year public relations student, said the biggest challenge she faces in the beginning of the semester is handling tuition and other expenses. She said being assured that she can afford the tuition is most important.

“The biggest challenge I face at the beginning of a semester is getting my tuition and expenses paid,” Williamson said. “It is important that I make sure I can afford the tuition and other expenses.”

Connecting with peers is a crucial element in overcoming the initial unease. FAMU fosters a tight-knit community where students support each other. Whether through study groups, social events, or shared experiences, building connections with fellow students helps create a support system that extends beyond the classroom.

Embracing change is a mantra echoed by many FAMU students. The new semester brings not only academic challenges but also personal growth opportunities. Stepping out of comfort zones, trying new activities, and embracing diverse perspectives contribute to a holistic college experience.

Yukwon Toney, a fourth-year broadcast journalism student, said that one mechanism students can use is having confidence in your abilities. He said that not overthinking aides in academic success.

“I’d recommend not overthinking it,” Toney said. “You make your experiences so… make sure you remember your ‘why’.”

The excitement of football games, homecoming festivities, and cultural events adds a layer of anticipation to the FAMU experience. Students eagerly look forward to these traditions, turning them into anchors that help ease the transition into a new academic term.

As the semester treads on, FAMU students approach the “new semester jitters” with a combination of structure, support, connection, and adaptability. As they navigate the uncharted territory of a fresh academic chapter, these strategies collectively contribute to a more confident and empowered student body, ready to embrace the opportunities and challenges that come their way.
