How can you stay informed?

All around us pivotal moments in politics are happening every second. From the war between Israel and Gaza to the GOP debate, our rapidly advancing society is pushing out content by the bulk.

So how can students stay informed about what we really need to know, all the while flushing out any fake news?

Quinn Bryant, an IDS social sciences major, feels that social media is one of the ways students can stay informed about worldly news and politics.

“Social media has many pages and informants that can help facilitate information, such as what’s going on in Israel for example and the genocides that are going on across the world,” Bryant said.

Social media is the medium for local, state, national, and international news. Political activist organizations such as Florida A&M’s Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People or NAACP, use their social media page to post graphics simplifying any laws or potential laws that might be passed.

Alexis Dumerjean, president of FAMU’s NAACP chapter, believes Twitter is one of her most used platforms for staying informed.

“For me, a good way to stay informed is through Twitter believe it or not,” Dumerjean said.

“Twitter used to be one of my favorite apps so I was on there quite often. Social media is a good way, but that is only if you use it to be resourceful.”

FAMU College Democrats is another political organization on campus that uses their platform to make students aware of political decisions that are going on and how they can affect us now or in the future. Not only are these posts informative but they also give students ways that they can become involved as well.

Jovan Mickens, president of FAMU College Democrats, says flushing out clickbait pages is the beginning of staying informed.

“I believe the best way for students to stay informed on international, national, and local news is to first delete or unfollow gossip/taboo pages, such as The Shaderoom or Hollywood Unlocked. I say that because almost nine out of ten times information posted there is either false or misleading,” Mickens said.

“A tactic the FAMU College Democrats use is that we post accurate information from trusted sources and post them on our social media platforms. Also, during our general body meetings, we discuss current events and try to educate our members about what’s going on in the world we live in.”

Just weeks ago, FAMU College Democrats came out with a post recap of Election Day in several states, highlighting key moments including Yusuf Salaam of the “Central Park Five” winning the New York City Council Seat.

Access to worldly news and politics is never far behind when it comes to FAMU, with the numerous organizations and clubs on campus, we’re constantly pushing out content.

By diversifying news sources, engaging in discussions, and seeking credible information, students can cultivate informed perspectives, contributing meaningfully to global conversations and shaping tomorrow’s world.
