As a college student, it can be tough trying to find a perfect study spot that provides unlimited coffee, tea and good vibes. The kava bars Kameleon and Kavakaze offer an ideal study spot and a sense of community.

Kava bars in Tallahassee have become a safe haven for loyal customers, working adults, and specifically college students. Hannah Bancroft, an employee at Kameleon, said that Kava bars offer a really good community for students.

“You know, you come in, you meet new people, and you can kind of start getting into deeper conversations about things — and I just think that’s very beneficial because being a college student can be so isolated,” Bancroft said. Neely Williams, a Kavakaze customer and Kamleoon employee said kava bars give people a place to go.

“I feel like it’s giving freshmen and sophomore students that are underage a place to go out, it doesn’t involve alcohol,” Williams said. “We’re giving people a place to go where they don’t have to necessarily be intoxicated with alcoholic beverages.”

Kameleon and Kavakaze provide more than a sense of community. They also aid in lessening the divide between people through so much in-person interaction compared to connecting through technology.

Ryan Lunt, a former employee at Kavakaze, said kava bars bring people together despite how divided people are in today’s society.

“Kava bars mean peace, sanctity and community,” Lunt said. “Kava itself is a very communal beverage, so it is always drunk together with other people – I think in such a divided period of our human existence, I believe that places like this are going to be kind of the next phase of us coming back together and returning to a more person to person existence.”

“When I went to my first kava bar, it was the first time I felt safe in Tallahassee because I just met people, and then I wanted to keep going,” Bancroft said. “They’re just one of my favorite places in the whole world, because any kava bar you go to, there’s just this community of just kind people. And they’re just going to treat you the same across the board.”
