Motivation for school can be challenging, especially when faced with complex tasks or subjects.
Students in college tend to have a jam-packed schedule at times. Education is often referred to
as a powerful resource to help mold students. Furthermore, it even helps personal growth and
development.

However, considering what factors motivate students to pursue school and higher education still
remains. Motivation may vary from person to person, but it is evident that it does play a role in
students’ lives. The tangibles and intangibles of motivation fuel students and their desire to
learn. College students have different reasons why they attend college.

On the one hand, education opens the door for ideas, perspectives, thrilled and complex ideas
to keep students engaged. Motivation for school may come from a simple mindset, a desire,
interactions, talent, passion, or even connections and opportunities.

Students around campus gave different answers. Destiny Edwards, a current FAMU student,
shares her thoughts on the motivation for school.

“The motivation for school would have to be career finding and job opportunities. I say this
because getting an education at a college level only shows that we are trying to get a good job
in our career field,” said Edwards. “Students like me are or can be so goal-driven that we land
great career jobs once we leave college.”

This goes to show that having an end goal for after college can be set as motivation for some
students that are going to school. Jason Adams, a current FAMU student, shares his opinion on
motivation involving school.

“School in college is not for the weak. The key is to remain persistent and resilient. Keep moving
forward even when times in school do get rough. It is only temporary, which will only lead to
success,” said Adams. “Build a support system because it does take a village to be successful
in college.”

The motivation sometimes cannot be clear to see. Students may have to find it within. Some
students refer to school as a place to nurture their passion. Whether it is music, sports, science,
or art, education in school can be a resource and give guidance to students that need to excel in
their field of choice.

Pursuing a passion can be a powerful motivator for anyone attending school. Donovan McLean
expressed some tips of how someone can get motivated in school.

“I think that people can build networks and interact with different people. There is a social
aspect of education that can provide networking with other people, which may lead to
motivation,” said McLean. “We get motivated by the potential mentorship, especially when we
hear about that rattler nation within ALUMI and the connections they may have.”

This shows that every student has different thoughts and opinions on what is the true motivation
for school. It varies from person to person, but ultimately, it combines these motives.
With the undeniable benefits of education, it is a worthwhile journey for students. Motivation for
school can fluctuate, but with the right mindset, students can overcome obstacles and fuel the
drive for their educational journey.
