The fall semester has begun, which means classes are back in full swing. Florida A&M University’s School of Journalism and Graphic Communications (SJGC) is excited to welcome students back, and ensure that each scholar is up to date on the new changes within the college and set up for a successful academic year on the hill.
On Tuesday, Sept. 12, students and faculty of SJGC came together in Lee Hall Auditorium to discuss new advancements and important changes taking place this year. Students were allowed to engage with their peers and have questions answered by faculty members, including Dean Mira Lowe.
“I wanted an opportunity to bring all our majors together and make sure we are starting the semester on the right foot by providing information that will be helpful for them throughout the academic year,” Lowe said.“We were very intentional about having all the majors represented so we could anticipate what students might want to know and provide them with the correct information.”
Dean Lowe is in support of events such as Colloquium and wishes she had similar moments during her undergraduate experience.
“I wish there were more opportunities when I was in school many years ago to bring us together as a student body to engage and ask questions,” Lowe said.
Faculty and staff were present during this event, including Career Development Professor and Internship Coordinator, Ranata Hughes.
Professor Hughes believes Colloquium is beneficial for all SJGC students to stay informed and to be inspired.
“The All-School Colloquium is important to students, faculty and staff because it’s a moment to gather as a school and address important matters, share golden moments and celebrate successes,” Hughes said. “Colloquium also allows students to be together in one room and see that they are not alone in their academic journey.”
Professor Hughes is always happy to assist students and give back to SJGC.
“It is such an honor to serve as an educator and Internship Coordinator here at SJGC,” Hughes said. “I absolutely love working with the students each day and helping them build their career paths. It gives me so much joy to see them win. My students often say I’m a gift to them, but they’re actually a gift to me,” Hughes added.
Students left the event feeling informed and familiarized with the new updates within J-School. Graduating senior Jaylin Alleyne enjoyed Colloquium and feels ready to take on her final year of undergrad.
“This was a great way to start the year off on the right foot,” Alleyene said. “I enjoyed how each department lead introduced themselves so we as students could be better acclimated, comfortable and in the know.”
The FAMU School of Journalism is dedicated to each student’s success and is constantly innovating new opportunities to propel scholars toward advancement in their future endeavors. Colloquium is one of the many events set in place to ensure each SJGC student is confident in their curriculum and is both prepared and informed about what is going on within their college.
