Some residents living close to the Florida State University campus have voiced concerns about the impact the university is having on their neighborhoods.
FSU’s southwest campus is adjacent to low density residential areas and access to the neighborhoods. Residents hope to address certain conditions around the area such as increased traffic, light pollution, and greater issues such as litter and debris in their neighborhood.
Alecia North, a resident near FSU’s southwest campus, says she hopes to find that FSU has a plan to help the surrounding community.
“Last year, because of COVID, there weren’t many people but now since everyone is back on campus this semester, I’m expecting more litter around and heavy traffic as well.” She added, “In the update, I hope there is something that can help with the communities around [FSU].”
John Dailey, Tallahassee’s mayor, said the universities’ master plans help not only the communities around but also Florida State and Florida A&M University.
Dailey and Tallahassee City Commissioners met earlier this month to discuss an update to Florida State University’s 10-to-20-year master plan.
A master plan is a document and policy guide designed to help communities create a vision of what they want to look like in the future. Master plans help guide communities in their decisions on land use development and preservation. Master plans are written and adopted by a local Planning Commission and might also be adopted by a local legislative body, although master plans are not laws on their own. And in the case of universities, master plans are adopted and approved by boards of trustees.
“So both Florida State and FAMU have a master plan,” Dailey said. “We do work hand in hand with both universities.”
He added, “As the universities are growing, and they are growing, we have to be very conscious of how they impact the surrounding communities, especially our neighborhoods. It is important that we preserve our neighborhoods but at the same time help our universities grow.”
