Every first Friday of the month college students in Tallahassee get together for clean, spiritual fun.

Fresh Friday is hosted by the community church Truth Gatherers Dream Center. Jermaine and Janetta Sims, collegiate pastors and hosts of the event, started Fresh Fridays as a way to engage with college students and create a safe space for them to develop a healthy relationship with God. The event started in April and the attendance has grown to more than 85 students earlier this month.

“It is all about fresh faith, fun and fellowship on a Friday night with young believers who come together to glorify God in their own way. Whether it’s through song, dance, rap or spoken word it’s all done to honor the Lord. At Fresh Fridays we also have local and touring musicians and artists, open mic, audience games, theater, comedy and other performing arts scheduled to perform this year,” Janetta Sims said in an email.

Taylar Hall, Black Caucus chair at FAMU and president of College Democrats, enjoys attending the monthly showcase.

“I absolutely loved Fresh Fridays. It was an amazing experience for myself and other college students. It was very important for me to be surrounded by like-minded individuals of strong faith. We also have a good amount of student talent, and clean fun,” she said.

The church creates fun, interactive icebreaker games to engage and relate to students. All while addressing the concerns they may have as young adults and scholars. By doing it this way, students have a stronger understanding of God and their faith.

Charity Davis, an FSU student and member of the church, said:  “I am looking forward to bigger and better Fresh Fridays. The new faces, the new talents, collaborations with other collegiate ministries, and more! I hope that Fresh Friday becomes a safe space where college students from all over Tallahassee and surrounding areas can worship God together.”

A few week ago, Jeermaine and Janetta Sims officially became a campus organization named “Da Truth at FAMU” and will be hosting an interest meeting in the coming weeks.

The event is great way for students to meet new people from the community and neighboring schools. Fresh Fridays will be held every first Friday of the month at Truth Gathers Dream Center Church off High Road.

Students looking to have some clean fun and increase their relationship with God are encouraged to attend.
