Alumni Association to host annual convention

Charlotte, N.C., will host the 2012 Florida A&M University National Alumni Convention: Renew The FAMU in You, May 17-19. The National Alumni Association has arranged a schedule of programs and events to get Rattlers and guests energized.

“That weekend we will be taking care of business, dealing with the nature of hazing to move forward, and taking the FAMU torch all over the county, said Tommy Mitchell NAA President.

As the 125 year anniversary of the university approaches, those attending the convention will have much more to celebrate.

President James H. Ammons is scheduled to give a state of university address to keep alumni up-to-date on the efforts of improvement at FAMU. The head football coach and athletic director will discuss the future of the athletics program. There will also be a panel comprised of prominent Rattlers discussing immediate and future financial needs and concerns.

FAMU Board of Trustee member Rufus Montgomery, a life member of NAA, applauds “President Mitchell on the increase of alumni activity and membership in and outside the state of Florida. We are well on our way to reclaiming Rattlers.”

For the 2010-2011 fiscal year donations from alumni increase by 32 percent .

Within the same year, only 3,300 of the 70,000 graduates donated to the association, which still collected $950,000.  Mitchell said, “If all 70,000 members gave $ 3.85 biweekly then we have the potential to collect $7 million a year, thus being able to support the university even more.”

Alumna Brittany Merchant of Fayetteville, N.C., is definitely interested in attending the convention and looks forward to be in the midst of seasoned alumni.

“I’m glad that the event is here in North Carolina, it shows that the alumni association takes notice that there are Rattlers outside of Florida. I can’t wait to attend the event.”

Weekend events will also include a career symposium, author showcase, wine tasting, cooking demonstrations, a casino night and a silent auction. Tickets for several events will be open to the public via the FAMUNAA Convention website, http://www.famualumniconvention.com
