Greek Extravaganza replaces step show

On Thursday, FAMU’s National PanHellenic Council will hold the Greek Extravaganza, which is a showcase and party for students to meet and greet with the fraternities and sororities. The Greek Extravaganza will replace the Greek Step Show of past homecomings. Although the event will still hold a step portion, it is more than just a step show.

“I feel that the Greek Extravaganza will finally give the campus a great look at the different organizations and allow us to move forward,” said Kevin Dagrin, a fourth-year business student from Orlando and member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.

Former FAMU President James H. Ammons suspended induction, enrollment, initiation, membership intake and recruitment from all organizations due to the hazing death of drum major Robert Champion.

“I believe Greek life is on the decline as a result of the hazing campaign,” said Maranda Adams, a second-year psychology student from West Palm Beach. “The Greek activity we see as students has significantly decreased over the past year from less strolling on the Set to less involvement on campus.”

The effort these organizations put toward programs that help social issues in society has been overshadowed by hazing. Many students know of Relay For Life, an event that brings awareness to breast cancer and helps raise money toward the cause.

Many Greek organizations have their own programs, such as Bras for the Cause, an even held by Alpha Kappa Alpha to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.

“I feel like the whole hazing issue has put Greeks under a huge magnifying glass,” said Alexia Jones, a fourth-year political science student from Eatonton, Ga., and member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. “Many of the rules that FAMU has put on us Greeks have changed the way we operate around campus, but I feel like the Greek Extravaganza is a great way for students to finally see all the organizations together and get to learn more about us.”

The Greek Extravaganza will be held during homecoming week in Gaither Gymnasium. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. The event will showcase the various talents of FAMU Greek organizations and Florida State University’s Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.

After the showcase, there will be a party for everyone in attendance, lasting until midnight. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased from FAMU Greek members. Tickets are also being sold by the Programming Office, located in H. Efferson Manning Student Union. Tickets are available for $5 and $7 at the door.
