FAMU's Living-Learning Community
With the student’s best interest in mind, Florida A&M University will offer Living-Learning Communities. LLCs will give first-year students a chance to live with other students who have common academic interests. They will reside in FAMU Village and be provided with unique opportunities to engage with faculty and students.
Second-year computer-engineering student, Adonis Doxilly, can see the benefits of having LLCs for freshmen students.
“We would motivate one another, build passion in our major and build discipline,” Doxilly said.
The students in the LLCs will get to participate in out-of-class learning experiences such as group activities, service projects, career exploration, field trips and cultural and social events. Academic areas such as Allied Health Sciences, Business and Industry, Journalism and Graphic Communication, Science, Technology and Engineering and Math (STEM) will provide LLCs. Students must be incoming students for the fall 2015-2016 academic year.
Former freshmen also had a positive response towards the new program as well. Second year biology student, John Mezier, can see the perks for the incoming students.
“I think it’s a great idea to put freshmen with the same mindset together from the start; it’ll be easier for them to transition and get a feel if they have someone who can relate to them,” Mezier said.
Once a student is accepted to be in an LLC they must remain in the community for at least one academic year. Selected individuals must also complete all work required for the community. LLCs do not allow roommates that are not admitted individually to the LLC.
Jean-Baptiste Estivens, resident assistant in FAMU Village, is optimistic about the idea of LLCs.
“It’s a great idea because it encourages students to form study groups that will help each other with their coursework during their matriculation,” said Jean-Baptiste.
Students who would like to be considered for an LLC must have an active on-campus housing application in order to be considered for membership.
The housing staff reviews housing agreements and the names of the students will be forwarded to the appropriate dean to be reviewed.
Students who are cleared will then either accept or decline the space. Students will receive room selection instructions on how to choose a room based on the available amount of spaces in the designated LLC.
LLCs have limited availability and are reserved on a first come, first served basis.
