Correspondent Mikhail Scot charts some of the historic moments in Florida A&M President JamesAmmons‘ five-year tenure at the head of the university. Ammons tendered his resignation to the Board of Trustees Wednesday.
July 2, 2007- James H. Ammons hired as the 10th president of Florida A&M University.
June 25, 2008- The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges removed FAMU from probation – a clear sign the university had recovered from the fiscal problems that had dogged it for years.
Oct. 31, 2008- After 500 days of improving financial and accreditation issues, Ammons is inaugurated as the 10th president of FAMU.
Jan. 16, 2009- State audit criticizes FAMU for not paying bills on time.
July 31, 2009- FAMU law school granted full accreditation by the American Bar Association.
Dec. 6, 2009- President Ammons and his leadership team were key presenters at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) in Atlanta on surviving a perfect storm and best practices for reaffirming accreditation.
Nov. 14, 2011. FAMU VP of Audit and Compliance Charles O’Duor resigns after reports that he turned in executive summaries instead of full audit reports to the Board of Trustees.
Nov. 19, 2011- Drum Major Robert Champion dies after being hazed by fellow band members.
Dec. 15, 2011- Gov. Rick Scott calls for Florida A&M Board of Trustees to suspend President Ammons effective immediately. The board declines.
Dec. 18, 2011- FAMU students march to the Governor’s Mansion to protest Rick Scott’s memo.
May 14, 2012- Ammons announced the suspension of the band for another year.
June 4, 2012- FAMU Ammons says only full-time students should be allowed entry into The Marching “100” under a broad plan that would also limit student participation in the band to four years and stiffen the academic requirements for joining.
June 7, 2012- Florida A&M Board of Trustees gives Ammons an 8-4 no confidence vote over his handling of the hazing scandal.
July 11, 2012- President Ammons announces resignation through letter to the university governing board. His resignation will take effect Oct. 11, 2012.
