Media fantasy distorts real-life love standards

Media and society places false ideals of what the perfect partner should be in the minds of youth, causing them to harbor unrealistic romantic expectations. Many little girls grow up watching Disney princess movies, imagining themselves falling in love with their Prince Charming and living their life happily ever after.

The problem is that it is all lies.

Television has this practice of broadcasting falsehood just to gain your attention. It is a shame because as we begin to mature, we believe we will find “the one,” and he will be perfect the way he is.

But in reality, your Prince Charming will not walk into your mansion bearing your glass slipper or come rescue you on his magic carpet.

At the age of 20, I’ve come to the realization that love isn’t for everybody and it may not be for me. With only one boyfriend on my record, I don’t have much experience, but I know exactly what I want and how I want it. The tricky thing is finding someone who fits a “perfect man” in my mind. This sounds nearly impossible.

In this day in age, we have lists. These lists consist of qualities we want our partner to have. Some lists can be as intricate as trigonometry homework while others are as simple as one plus one.

The problem is that society causes us to think that we will eventually find someone tailored to our elaborate lists.

Society tells us that we should not compromise ourselves for someone else, but in actuality, no one will ever be comparable to these impossible lists we make up, which cause us to wait around for the perfect mate and, ultimately, be single for the rest of our lives.

So, what ever happened to falling in love?

You know that type of love that happens on accident. With social media sites on the rise, and dating websites http://www.christianmingle.com/ populating all over the Internet there’s no such thing as accidental love. It’s like a trend to search for love instead of letting love find you.

There is a saying that goes, “Looking for love in all the wrong places,” but why are we looking for love in the first place?
Society has made it unacceptable to be single or to not have any “boo things.” It’s even frowned upon to not be married by a certain age. This causes humans to feel as if there is no meaning to life if they do not have a significant other to share it with.

The pressure applied to find that special person sometimes produces frantic, desperate relationships that end tragically.
One thing we have to face is that we all won’t fall in love like Jay-Z and Beyoncé or have a beautiful fairy tale ending like Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.

If we keep letting media tell us what love should look like, we will miss out on our own love experiences. Every person you meet will not be that perfect person on your list, but be willing to compromise and accept him because you never know, that frog might end up being your prince.
