Mangum will enter FAMU into new era

On January 9th, the world watched as the Florida A&M University community made a choice that simultaneously honors a history of excellence and embraces a bold vision for its future. After a search that attracted nearly 50 talented individuals, the Board of Trustees selected Dr. Elmira Mangum to serve as the 11th university president. To 'the Hill', Dr. Mangum brings a broad set of experiences and resources that will undoubtedly prepare FAMU to enter into a new era of prominence. As Student Body President and Trustee, I consider my vote in the affirmative, as an opportunity to vote according to the needs of students.

Under the leadership of our Interim President, Dr. Larry Robinson, we have continued to make strides and meet the challenges set before us. Now removed from Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) probation, the next president will begin a term in good standing. The 11th president of Florida A&M University must be capable of carrying more than 126 years of legacy while executing a belief that our best days are ahead.  The next president must be equipped to successfully lead in the expansion and development of programs that will ensure FAMU's ability to attract and develop the best minds. With so much work to be done, the next President must be a tireless and enthusiastic champion of the ideals of the College of Love and Charity. In Dr. Mangum, I trust that we have met these needs.

Dr. Elmira Mangum joins us after more than 25 years as an executive in higher education. Among the many gifts she brings to Florida A&M University are those gained as the current Vice President for Budget and Planning at Cornell University. Her extensive professional background and research underscores her belief in the increasing validity of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. I charge this wonderful student body in joining me with embracing her leadership, guidance and vision set forth for our institution. Forward ever, backwards never, FAMU today, FAMU tomorrow and FAMU Forever!
