Rap music promotes use of molly

With the lyrics popped a molly, I'm sweatin' (woo!) in his song All Gold Everything, rapper Trinidad James has contributed to bringing a drug called molly to the forefront of popular culture.

Molly is purer form of MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy. The drug comes in powder or crystalline form. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the drug is known to induce a euphoric state, as it causes a rush of serotonin to the brain.

Lamar Jones, a senior business finance student from Miami, said molly contributes to him having an enjoyable time when he goes out and heightens his overall experience.

When I take molly, I can feel the rush, Jones said. It heightens my senses, and the rush intensifies everything and makes partying 10 times cooler. All I want to do is dance and have a good time.

According to www.medicalquestionsanswers.org, the long-term effects of molly are memory loss, anxiety, paranoia, insomnia and headaches. Side effects include dehydration, hypertension, hyperthermia, heart failure andkidney failure. There are many physical effects such as hallucinations, increased heart rate, dehydration, higher body temperature, heart failure and increased blood pressure.

Sharon Mitchell, a physical therapy student at Florida State University, said the drug did not leave her feeling well, and she is not likely to try it again.

I would never try molly ever again, Mitchell said. I was awake for hours. I could not sleep. I was hot then cold. It felt like everything was rushing to my brain. It was not a good feeling, and we arent even going to talk about how thirsty it made me.

Rapper Juicy J has made molly his drug of choice to promote. He also mentions it in his song Get Higher.

Take the blunt, dip it in the lean, then light it. Pop a molly, drink some orange juice, get higher.

Shardell Roscoe, also known as Young Ardie, is a senior criminal justice student and rapper from Fort Lauderdale. She said the glorification of drugs by fellow musicians does not tempt her to indulge.

No matter who is rapping about molly, I would never try it, Roscoe said. There just seems to be too many risks, and I have my whole life ahead of me.
