Florida A&M University is finally bringing back Relay for Life. This event was last held in 2015.

Student Government Association Secretary of State and Relay for Life chairwoman Alexis Lynn pitched the idea to the Student Senate. The purpose and mission of Relay for Life is to raise funds to improve cancer survival, decrease the incidence of cancer and improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their caretakers.

“It was important to bring back FAMU Relay for Life because as a historically black university we have the stereotype that we only like to party and have fun and we don’t do service for the community. Bringing back Relay for Life was to show how hard our student organizations work and how dedicated they are to helping out the community in any way possible with the correct leadership,” Lynn said. “Being the chairwoman for this event has taught me so much about myself such as leadership skills, time management, and proper planning. Next year FAMU Relay for Life is coming back stronger and reaching more goals.”

Lynn and committee members created a goal to raise $10,000 for the event. With four days left until the event there has been a total of $10,063.99 raised so far. Each student organization participating has a goal of raising $500 and each Greek organization has a goal of raising $1,000. Also, every Friday at The Set the Relay for Life committee members and student organizations had games to continue to raise money and every Set Friday so far they have raised over $100.

“Cancer research has an impact on billions of lives across the world and to know that the Senate was able to support this really puts us in good spirits,” incoming student body president Rochard Moricette said.

The event will begin at 8 p.m. Friday; it continues overnight until 8 a.m. Saturday at the Pete Griffin Track. There will be 12 hours of entertainment, free food, and carnival-themed games and over 35 student organizations and 15 Leon County organizations participating. Some of the organizations performing include Attack Dance Crew, Mahogany Dance Troupe, Voices, Ladies of Torque and Rampage Step Team.
