1887 Ways to Care, hosted by Stephanie Colter, kicked off at 8:45 a.m. Saturday. Students warmed up at the Campus Rec for a kick off rally before dispersing to begin various community service tasks.
“Being able to provide service not just for FAMU’s campus and dorms but for the community as a whole within the area is very important to me. We aren’t just cleaning up a dorm; we are going out to certain communities that surround our campus and doing a service event. It is important as leaders that we go out of our way to help and assist not only our campus, but those in need around us,” said senior Jordan Sealey, who assisted in picking up trash around Sampson and Gibbs halls with Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
Some of the projects included trash clean-ups, assisting in housing areas, helping out in the cafeteria, cleaning around the post office, revamping plots and the band field, and canvassing the D-Block area of Frenchtown to pass out fliers and mailers to residents.
Farmshare also participated in 1887 Ways to Care, and an estimated 400 families came out to receive the food being distributed. Farmshare distributes food every Tuesday during the fall and spring semesters. If the weather permits, it also happens over the summer as well.
“We give out free food to students, faculty and staff on Tuesdays. This is a way to stretch your dollar even more. This food comes from the state of Florida and on Thursdays, Second Harvest provides food,” said Harriet Jennings, the office manager of Student Health Services.
Colter hopes to host this event again next year with a bigger turn out from the student body. Some of the students who participated included members of the Divine 9, NCNW, Campus Curlz and many more.
