Get Fit FAMU is an initiative of SGA’s appointed surgeon general and typically spans about a month.

Jade Bryant, a junior biology pre-med major from Bessemer, Alabama, is the current surgeon general for the executive branch of SGA along with Kimberly Williams,  a sophomore biology pre-med major from Orlando, who serves as the deputy surgeon general. They are chairing this week of events.

“We loved the initiative and opted to bring it back as a week jam-packed with informative and fun events revolving around physical and mental health,” Bryant said. “This week is taking place in order to get the student body active and fit both mind and body. Through workout classes, mental health seminars and healthy eating events we are looking to get the campus engaged and excited about getting fit.”

According to Williams, their role is to promote health awareness on campus and throughout the student body. “We formulated this week together, created the events, planned the events, and have brought the entire week to effect,” she said.

The week is a past initiative the current surgeon general is bringing back in the form of a week.

On Monday there was Fitness With a Twist featuring Splack Fitness.

“This was a cardio class with very fun and engaging dance moves which also boost your heart rate and get you active,” Williams said.

This event was also partnered with the Lovely Ladies of TorQue.

“Tuesday we had Minority Mental Health featuring Catherine Young and partnered with Big Brother Little Brother, this event brought awareness to the mental health of students on campus. It offered them ways to look deeper and improve their mental health where needed all in an interesting informative way,” Bryant said.

Wednesday, they hosted Zumba in the FAMU Recreation Center at 6 p.m. featuring Chocolate Waisted, in partnership with National Council of Negro Women. Bryant said, “This event will get students active and fit.”

Jasmin Richardson-Sutton, founder of Chocolate Waisted fitness says, “The event was amazing. The energy in the room was electric and it was great to see the students take part in an activity that promotes health and wellness. Truly it all works together. Being well physically, emotionally, financially and spiritually. It was an honor to be there.”

On Thursday, there was a healthy eating class in the Phase Assembly room at 6 p.m. featuring Yennifer Castillo, in partnership with SISTUHS. “We will bring awareness to healthy eating and provide a live cooking class where samples will be provided to show students it can be delicious to feed your body healthy and nutritious meals,” Williams said.

On Friday the week will come to a close with a clash of the classes kickball tournament in partnership with Campus Activities Board, directly after Set Friday.

“The outcome we hope for students to gain is a new outlook on their health, we want them to know eating healthy and getting fit can be fun while also effective,” Bryant said.
