Be sure to mark your calendar for 1887 Ways to Care. Starting at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, Florida A&M University’s campus will be coming together to tackle important projects on campus and in the surrounding areas to help make the community better and stronger.

Leadership and Service Learning Coordinator Stephanie Colter attended graduate school at Florida State University where they hosted The Big Event. In 2013 this community service event turned into a Tallahassee community-wide event where students from Florida State University, Florida A&M University and Tallahassee Community College come together to say “thank you” to the Tallahassee community by participating in student-run service projects.

This Saturday’s event will start with a Kick Off Rally beginning at the campus Rec Center for a quick workout to get everyone warmed up for the coming activities. Raffle prices and food will also be distributed. Some of the activities on Saturday’s event will include a campus clean-up, revamping plots across campus, assisting housing facilities, constructing sustainable gardens, and helping Farm Share give out food.

“Participating in 1887 Ways to Care is an important initiative because it displays FAMU students’ commitment to serving their community. It is also a coming together of different organizations whose purpose is to make the campus community more enhanced,” senior Kayanna Jacobs said.

Some of the university organizations that will be included are NCNW, Black Women in Medicine and Campus Curlz. And some of the sponsors include FAMU Bookstore, Gillys, Sunnispeaks and Little Ceasers.

If you are interested in getting involved in 1887 Ways to Care, registration will be open the day of at the event, starting at 8:45. Community service project ideas for a department, campus facility or surrounding areas are being accepted. A proposal form can be submitted through iStrike.

Be sure to check iStrike for event updates. Any questions, comments, or concerns can be directed to the Leadership & Service Learning Coordinator Stephanie Colter via email or by calling 850-599-3400.
