How to get back on your academic feet

Florida A&M University’s students are still recovering from another memorable homecoming and destructive Hurricane Michael. With the days missed from school, professors are cracking down on the semester. Midterms, test, quizzes, papers and projects will all be due soon, and we are adults now, so we are obligated to take care of our business.

Thankfully, there is no need to panic my fellow rattlers! I have a few tips on how you can get ahead in your classes so the semester will not leave you behind.

First things first, communication is key to finishing the semester off strong. It is time to inform professors of concerns you’ve had up until now. Get your access codes and missed assignments situated, and ask your professors to clarify unclear instructions.

The next step to finishing strong is to get organized. Agendas, calendars and personal reminders are essential. Creating a blueprint of the remaining days can save you a lot of time and energy. Check the syllabus for upcoming assignments and work ahead if you can, this will prevent you from missing due dates.

Attendance and extra credit opportunities should be second nature also. Take advantage of every opportunity you have to redeem yourself.

Checking in with your support system will be imperative too. They will provide the motivation and inspiration you need to keep moving forward.

Terrell Nelson, a senior sociology student at FAMU, shared his thoughts and advice for students on how students can recover emotionally and academically.

“I know that a lot of students came back from the Hurricane Michael and lost a lot, but you have to pace yourself,” Nelson said. “You need to strategize and make sure you have everything you need at home because if you are not good at home, you will not be good at school. Also try to fall back into the flow of things and write everything down.”

In addition, you will need to cut off all distractions and get disciplined. It’s the perfect time for a social media detox and to limit social outings. You also have to get ready for upcoming holidays so your undivided attention is required.

Lastly, reward yourself. We all deserve to treat ourselves. Even if you buy yourself some shoes from the mall, go on a weekend trip Atlanta or even take yourself out to eat after you pass your test or exams. Those little treats will give you time to reflect and prepare for the next semester.
