Mormons hoping to convert FAMU students

FAMU students have seen them on campus. They are easy to spot because they don’t look like FAMU students, even though they are college-aged.

Some students have been approached by them – and many students speed-walk past them to avoid communication.

It is time to get to know the Mormons.

Gregory Thane Chapple is one of the Mormons who frequently visits FAMU’s campus.  He explained that Mormons believe that Jesus Christ is the savior of the world and the only begotten son of God. They believe in his life, ministry, grace, love, and sacrifice for the sins of the world.

When Christ was alive he established his church, but after he was crucified and all his disciples were killed, his church and the fullness of his gospel were lost.

After centuries of being lost, God called a prophet to restore Jesus Christ's church on earth. Mormons believe that their church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is the Lord's church restored to the earth and led by a living prophet who receives revelation from God to guide God's church.

Nick Jonas, a FAMU student, spoke with one of the Mormons on campus. “Well, it wasn’t bad for me because I already knew about their whole speech on what they do. It was annoying though because I told them what I believed in and they still persisted to get me to find out more about the Mormons,” said Jonas.

While some students show no interest, there are students who are open-minded and take the time to engage and listen to the Mormons’ message.

Chapple said that FAMU is a special place where a lot of people are willing to talk about their beliefs and love for Christ.  “We have had a lot of success ministering on FAMU. People have and continue to heed our message, participate, and join our church,” he said.  “Our goal when we come to FAMU’s campus is to fulfill our purpose as the Lord's servants. We invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.

“We call people to repentance, so they can receive the fullness of happiness and joy in this life, and we baptize converts into the Lord's church. We try to talk to as many people as possible so they all can have the opportunity to hear and receive our message of the Lord's mercy and love. We teach doctrine that has been restored to the earth and the questions of life. If you have any questions about religion, God, or the gospel, we would love to answer your questions,” he added.

Brittney Williams, a FAMU student, said she spoke to the Mormons but doesn’t plan on visiting their church.

“They were very polite and sincere. He handed me a small bible and said have a great day. It was a small King James Bible. It didn’t not make me want go to their church, but it was nice to have someone smile on campus in the heat,” said Williams.

The church has activities especially for college student. The address to the nearest church building is 312 Stadium Drive near FSU’s soccer complex. All visitors are welcome, Chapple said.
