After announcing a partnership with America’s Healthier Campus Initiative this summer, FAMU will be presenting a week of events called “Healthy Campus Week.”

This week will focus on improving the lifestyles of FAMU’s students through food, fitness, and fun.

The slogan that is being used is: “Creating a healthier FAMU by promoting active lifestyle, healthy food & nutrition, and community engagement.”

Tanya Tatum, director of health services at FAMU, talked about how student health services will be involved with this week’s events.

“We will be highlighting some of the great things that Metz has provided for us. Some of the different ways people can eat healthy and the different options that you have. We will also be doing different water stations at various places around campus. So there are some new things for people to look forward to,” said Tatum.

With new additions such as the Chopping Block — FAMU is taking great strides toward providing better food options for the student body per students’ requests.

Some of the events taking place this week will include:

  • Blood Pressure and BMI Checks in the Student Services Building (Monday 9/24 & Wednesday 9/26)
  • Morning Starters (Al Lawson Center)Tuesday and Thursday 9/25 and 9/27 from 6 a.m. – 8 a.m. (There will be a competition between colleges, schools, divisions and departments.)
  • Stress Release After Five - FAMU's Largest Zumba Party (The Quad near the Eternal Flame) Tuesday 9/25 at 5:45 p.m.
  • Stress Release After Five - FAMU's Largest Yoga Event (The Quad near the Eternal Flame) Wednesday 9/26 at 5:45 p.m.
  • What’s Cookin' (Phase III Kitchen) Thursday 9/27 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.   Space is limited. RSVP via iStrike.
  • Campus Walk Out (Lee Hall to Student Services Center) Friday 9/28 from 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
  • A $100 credit for Metz Catering will also be awarded the campus organization with the most participants present at the Zumba and Yoga events. With these two events, there is actually $200 up for grabs.

Tychae Grays, a junior public relations major, says that she thinks the changes and the week are great and necessary for the university as a whole. She did not know about FAMU’s partnership with America’s Healthier Campus Initiative.

“I definitely feel like this initiative is necessary. I feel like we need it just in general. There is a high rate of obesity, so that is definitely something we need to work on for the university and in the world,” said Grays.

Some of the events taking place this week will include: Blood pressure checks, morning walks, yoga on the quad and Zumba on the quad.
