Career and Internship Expo is next week

Florida A&M University will host its bi-annual Career and Internship Expo Wednesday, Sept. 26, in the Al Lawson Center.

At the peak of recruitment season, it is essential for students to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Career Center. The career fair will include more than 140 employers representing various companies and organizations ready to hire Rattlers.

To better prepare students for the big day, there are a series of career-oriented events set to lead up to the career fair including, “Strike Right,” “Let’s Get Technical” and the “Welcome Reception & Employer Spotlight.”

The director of the career center, Shereada Harrell, has been working diligently to ensure the students enjoy success at the fair.

“There are a couple of the events that we are hosting, where employers are coming on campus prior to the fair to help students,” said Harrell.

The first event “Strike Right” will be held from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. today in the Grand Ballroom. This is the first time an event of this caliber is being held.

“It’s a career prep day, where students come in to get advice about different topics [such as] professional attire, how to do your 30-second infomercial, resume tips, what employers are looking for… We will also have some people doing resume reviews on sight,” said Harrell.

There are many students who have never gone on a job interview or had to prepare a resume, but the career center can help with that. With all the incentives offered by the career center, there are endless opportunities to secure a job.

The services that the career center offers are not just on an annual bases. Students can visit the office anytime throughout the semester to engage in the offered resources.

Students will not only be able to obtain jobs at the expo but will also be able to gain internships.

Senior social work student Raven James is looking forward to the internship opportunities.

“I would love to get hands-on experience while I am still in school to better my resume, so I am focused on gaining the right internship before graduation,” said James.

Even if you are not currently seeking employment, it is still a great opportunity to attend the fair and events to give an insight of how to be prepared for the career fair next spring.

Carissa Jackson, a sophomore education student, is also looking forward to the career fair.

"Since attending my first career fair in the fall semester of my freshman year, I have looked forward to attending, not only for job purposes but to see the interaction between employers and students so I can see what to look forward to when its time for me to enter the job market,” said Jackson.

If students need assistance with appropriate attire, JC Penney has partnered with FAMU, to give students a 40 percent discount on professional attire.
