Are you ready for one of the largest student service projects in the nation?

On Saturday March 24, more than 2,000 college students from FAMU, FSU and TCC will rally to express their gratitude for the Tallahassee community. The Big Event is an annual occasion that incorporates service-oriented activities for students, faculty and sponsors to share with residents of their college town.

Joe Nussbaum, SGA Vice President at Texas A&M University in 1982, started the tradition. Nussbaum believed that this was the least students could do as a “thank you” to local residents and businesses. FSU’s student government has adopted the idea as the official event for community service.

The occasion will begin at the Tucker Civic Center.

Participants will use engage in activities to interact with community leaders. Volunteers will finish off with more than 100 site visits that include park cleanups, food pantry packaging, and senior home assistance.

Jason Randall, public relations director for the Big Event, said, “The mission of The Big Event Tallahassee is simple. It’s all about saying thanks, giving back locally, and empowering participants to volunteer throughout the year.

“Through service-oriented activities, The Big Event Tallahassee strives to create a culture of campus and community unity which challenges students to engage in year-round community service and culminates in a yearly Big Event.”

Charles Maggitas, director of recruitment, looks forward to another year of maintaining and building relationships to create a selfless culture of service with Tallahassee natives.

“The Big Event is one of the best ways that college students and faculty are able to come together and give back to the community that has given us so many opportunities. I hope that The Big Event will inspire each volunteer to continue doing service throughout their time in college and beyond,” said Maggitas.
