The Office of Counseling Services has moved and is now located at 636 Gamble Street.

OCS recently celebrated their first open house in their new building to extend their efforts of connecting with students and staff and to welcome Rattlers to learn about the exciting outreach initiatives and services being offered for the semester.

Florida A&M University Counseling Services is here for students from Orientation to Graduation. This facility service more than 3,000 students each academic year.

FAMU has six full time professional counselors who have earned a graduate degree in counseling and have completed over 2,000 hours of supervised experience.

Marquis Stewart, Ed.D., L.M.H.C. Mental Health Professional who specializes in depression, anxiety, and trauma has been working for Famu OCS for nine years and is the longest member on the staff.  He has influenced numberless young men to provide utilization of male services.

“I have created an outreach called Tallahassee Male of strength organization to prevent violence against women, discuss masculinity, and inform unhealthy virgins with the proper information,” said Mr. Stewart.

Students can get up to 12 sessions for free at the counseling center. There are different sessions called individual, couple, and group. Each session last generally 50 minutes to one hour. According to OSC, fall semester typically has the most students sessions. Students may call in, email or walk in to make a appointment.

One of the centers organizations is the “Active Minds” groups where they practice to increase awareness and reduce stigma about mental health among college students. The goal is empower students to speak openly about mental health in order to educate others and encourage help seeking.

Quantina Washington, M.Ed., L.M.H.C Mental health professional, is the Assistant Director of FAMU OSC and advisor for the Active Minds Outreach program. The outreach organization is having an event with Voices poetry group called Love On The Brain the second week of February.

“I encourage all students to attend. We will touch basis on relationships; the good, the bad and ugly. It’s going to be a night of poetry, music and a good time.” Said Washington.

The Counseling Center encourages all students and faculties to come out and use the resources FAMU has provided to the university which is designed to help people through counseling.

Anika C. Fields, Ph.D Director of The Counseling Center, trusts her trained staff to help identify and explore student concerns and work with them in exploring past events and develop new skills.

“Our purpose here is for you to go to school and get a degree without having to deal with mental health issues that will set you back and maybe even have you to leave school for a while. That’s what we want to prevent and that’s why we’re here.”

The Counseling Center is full time from 9-5 Monday-Friday.
