Spirits were high as proud Rattlers filled the room at the Young Alumni Giving (Y.A.G.) Brunch on Friday, Oct. 13 in the Grand Ballroom at Florida A&M University.

Guest were served a light lunch which included glasses of orange juice paired with chicken and waffles complemented with fruit and other savory treats.

Student artwork was showcased and sold during this event, and the colorful pieces added to the vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.

Creator of the original series “GIANTS,” James Bland, served as the host for the 11th annual brunch.

“This event is a reminder of the greatness that is FAMU, it’s good to come back home…,” Bland said.

Bland is a 2008 School of Business and Industry (SBI) graduate from Florida A&M University.

Alumni came together to present a variety of scholarships to current students.

“We’ve seen a larger turn out when it’s hosted on campus, this year is the largest amount of scholarships we’ve given out since we started,” said Ricquel Jackson, the advisor for “Y.A.G.”

Jackson previously served as chairman of Y.A.G. for three years.

Several students were selected for one of the 12 scholarships. These recipients were required to complete the application process and write an essay catered to that specific scholarship.

The awards ranged from $500 to $1000, and were given, based on their application, to deserving and determined scholars.

“Typically when we look at the alumni association, it’s usually filled with older alumni, so we wanted to engage the young alumni,” Bland said.

This event allowed current and past scholars to network and reinforce the importance of giving back to the university.

“I am so impressed by the creativity and ingenuity that I see at this event, I understand that these are all Rattlers providing art work throughout the room,” Interim President Larry Robinson said.

Debora Castor, an artist whose work was on display, received the Michael Mitchell Creative Arts Scholarship in order to continue her passion in the arts.

“Let us know about your great accomplishments, we really want to tell your stories about you after you depart from this institution,” Robinson said.
