First Taste of Tally helps tickle taste buds

Hundreds of residents had their taste buds tickled at the inaugural Taste of Tally.

Taste of Tally Food Festival celebrated their first annual event Saturday at Cascades Parks. Taste of Tally is one of the biggest food festivals to take place in Tallahassee, offering samples of food from many restaurants with their very own signature taste.

Restaurants like Uncle Maddio’s Pizza, Chicken Salad Chick, Muscle Maker, Chuy’s Mexican Food and Smallcakes came out to take part in the festivities. Smallcakes’ Events Coordinator Angela Sykes said she looks forward to meeting the people of the community she serves.

“We love doing community events and getting out and meeting all the people that keep the business alive in town,” Sykes said.

Some Smallcakes aren’t that small at all. The company’s cakes come in various sizes such as “jumbos” which is larger than a cupcake and actually the size of a small cake. Other sizes offered are: mini, mediums and standard-sized cakes. With so much variety, Sykes guaranteed new flavor choices.

“You’re guaranteed to discover a new flavor on each visit,” she said. “We’ve got 13 daily flavors every single day along with two to three specials. So there will always be 15 to 16 flavors each time. (We have) flavors such as red velvet, key lime, chocohalic, strawberry, birthday cake, and we have funky ones like Kentucky bourbon and maple bacon.”

Smallcakes has two locations in Tallahassee: one on Thomasville Road located in Killearn shopping center and another on Apalachee Parkway. Smallcakes was joined by more 20 other local restaurants.

From desserts to the grill, Grub Burger is a burger bar that focuses on gourmet burgers with their extensive menu. Managing partner of Grub Burgers Jabriel Sauls said they offer more than just burgers.

“We have beef burgers, turkey, chicken, tuna and salmon as well as veggie burgers. We also offer salads and chicken tenders,” Sauls said.

From freshly baked buns to the salads and sauces made from scratch, everything at Grub Burger is done fresh.

“Grub Burger’s mission is to serve real food,” Sauls said. “The Grub acronym is good people, real food, unique vibe, big flavors.”

Grub Burger is located at Carriage Gate, 3425 Thomasville Rd #21, Tallahassee, FL 32309.

Taste of Tally food-seekers Foluke Olaoye and Nakia Daniels were familiar with some of the restaurants at the event. They were looking forward to waking up their taste buds with new flavors.

“The ones (restaurants) we really don’t know about are the ones we want to try, maybe Smallcakes,” Olaoye and Daniels said.

Curtis Blue Jr., an occupational therapist and a 2011 Florida A&M University graduate, showed his support at the event by trying out foods from restaurants he’s not familiar with.

“Island Wing Company had a Yellowfin Tuna Dip that was great,” Blue said. “Nefertari’s was definitely good: black rice and vegan mac and cheese. I recommend anyone to go check them out.”

To add to the jovial atmosphere, the festival offered live music by the Billy Rigsby Band.
