New Grocery Store Chain Draws Concern

By early next year there will be a Piggly Wiggly grocery store on South Monroe Street, the grocery chain will open in the Harvey’s site.

Many residents on the southside of Tallahassee are excited about the new addition because they will have little access to fresh produce, others aren’t so open to the idea.

“We want Piggly Wiggly to come in with the mindset of a Trader Joe’s or Publix, we want it to be an upgrade… it’s not something that I would personally want there,” Tiffany Hill a southside resident told the Tallahassee Democrat.

Piggly Wiggly has more than 600 stores in 17 states.

“We think the Piggly Wiggly is the perfect fit for the location, and it’s similar model to the Harveys that was there, we believe it’s going to help satisfy the food desert that is a very real issue in the area,” said Ed Murray a director, president and broker at NAI TALCOR.

NAI TALCOR, the company that provides commercial management for where the Piggly Wiggly will sit offered the space to several retailers in an effort to find the right fit for the space.

“I was struck by people wanting a destination shopping opportunity. I realized that I wanted a destination shop opportunity there as well,” said Parks a long-time resident of the south side.

Operating a Piggly Wiggly in Quincy, Roy Moore is confident that residents will be satisfied with their shopping experience at the popular franchise.

“Piggly Wiggly has been around for a long time. We are a legit supermarket, we believe in participating in the community with charity organizations. We make sure our products are fresh, and we use products from growers in our area,” Moore said.
