Big Brother Little Brother Interacting with Incoming Freshmen
There is always a place for you at Florida A&M University (FAMU), and the involvement fair makes sure you strike into action.
With more than 70 clubs, organizations, and local businesses, incoming freshmen entered eager to see what FAMU clubs and organizations could offer from the informational tables along the walls of the Al Lawson Gymnasium.
Clubs such as Big Brother Little Brother mentoring program, various dance organizations, and Greek organizations were all in attendance. Representatives from the various organizations were waiting to answer any tough questions, and help students sign up and get active in their university.
Local businesses were also present to let students know what is available to them now that they are in the Tallahassee area.
Jasmine Lesley, a FAMU graduate and owner of Sworlz Cupcake and Painting Studio in Tallahassee, Fla. promoted her business at this year's involvement fair.
“Coming to the involvement fair has helped us connect with so many students by gaining followers on social media since our recent location change,” said Lesley.
Besides the usual dancing and singing organizations, there were also more than 30 clubs present within the various majors on campus.
Danielle McCloud, a fourth-year education student at FAMU, expressed why joining clubs within your major is so important.
“Being a part of the Florida Student Education Association has helped me grow into the professional educator I want to emulate,” McCloud said. “We are here to encourage education majors to get a head start on their future career.”
Church groups were also present for students who want to continue their worship despite being miles away from home.
Stephon Parker, a member of Bethel Baptist Church, shared his thoughts on why involving freshmen is so important.
“We want to make students feel more at home while they are in the Tallahassee area for the next four years,” said Parker. “We want to make that connection, not to just FAMU but all surrounding universities.”
Various hair care vendors participated in this year’s involvement fair. Hair care companies such as LottaBody and Crème of Nature had young lady rattlers eager to try samples of their latest products. Taking a simple picture and posting it to social media earned students free hair care products and a chance to win a $500 gift card.
With all these great opportunities available to this year’s upcoming freshmen, the involvement fair is in place to make sure everyone finds someplace where they belong.
